Romance
Everyone needs a safe space.
For Lizzie Warner, that space has always been in front of
the camera on her hit show, or on stage to a sold out concert arena. Since
before she can remember, she’s been a star, but that may be about to
change.
She’s nineteen. Her show has been cancelled and now she’s
going to play the lead in a new prime time drama series, but is the world ready
to take her seriously, or will she be typecast as the cute tween queen
forever?
Her network has decided to be aggressive and has invested
millions of dollars in an ad campaign for her show, money she’s not sure she can
earn back. Her co-star can’t stand her, and the writing for the show turns out
to be poor at best. The only reason Lizzie didn’t walk away from the job offer
to begin with is because she’s broke, the victim of a decade of bad money
management.
Then there’s Devon, the personal trainer at her gym.
Arrogant and abrasive, he’s the last guy she should ever find attractive, but
she has a hopeless crush on him anyway, and he doesn’t seem entirely
disinterested either. In fact, sometimes he’s downright sweet to her. If only
he weren’t an untamable bad boy who uses and dumps women like they’re nothing.
Though Lizzie’s friends warn her to stay away, he’s the only person who can
create what she needs: a safe space. But is there any way she can break him of
his years' long habit of being a user?
Love songs on the radio that were

(that also speak to the themes of the book)

Waiting for Superman by Daughtry
Songs that speak to Lizzie’s career
crisis-
Am I Wrong? by Nico and Vinz
(specifically,
what they have to say about the inspiration for that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMdY5OJY0ms)
Nolita Fairytale by Vanessa Carlton
(Okay, I just
have to find a Vanessa Carlton song whenever I’m asked to put together a
playlist. I love her! Anything on her Heroes
and Thieves album got played many times while I wrote this.)
[Devon] plops two boxes of Pie Pops
on the hood between us.
“No way,” I tell him. “One box.”
“There are two. Deal with it.”
“Put one away.”
“We don’t have to eat both.” He
tears one open and tosses me a Pie Pop.
I scowl at him as I tug the wrapper
off and he scowls right back as he does the same to his. “Kyra will pay?” I
ask. “You’ll make her do the same workout we’ll need to do to burn these off?”
“Yeah, okay. In that case, we
should eat both boxes and really make her suffer.” Each box holds two Pie Pops.
“That’s a pretty good
justification,” I say.
“I know, right?” he says, biting
into his ice cream.
“Since we were going to eat both
boxes anyway.”
– This gives you some idea of what Pie Pops taste like. Devon’s a
personal trainer and Lizzie’s an actress, and even they can’t resist gorging on
them when Lizzie’s roommate saddles them with a couple of boxes.
“Punch her,” comes my roommate’s
voice, “and pay big time. You cannot afford to mark that face.”
– This
line is spoken by Kyra, and it’s just so Kyra. So mouthy and at the same time so aware of how ridiculous fame can be,
that a scratch on a famous person’s face can cost thousands of dollars in
damages.
[Devon’s] smile is pure kindness,
and it lessens my pain more than I’d expect. His whole demeanor says, “You can
be yourself around me, Lizzie. I like the real you, even if you’re nuts.”
In that moment, I don’t have a
crush on him anymore. I’m completely and utterly in love.
– I think this is something everyone can relate to. The desire to have
someone who accepts us for who we are. And if they’re a gorgeous member of the
opposite sex, that doesn’t hurt either.
“I’m done running from this because
I love you and I know I can trust you with anything, even my heart… if you want
it. Honestly, it’s yours whether you do or not.”
– This
is spoken by Devon, and it was not easy to get him there. My challenge
with this book was getting a bad boy to realistically give his heart to our
heroine.
2 winners will receive a prize pack that includes: a signed
paperback of the book, one pen of the winner's choice from EM's Etsy store
(www.etsy.com/shop/EMTippettsBookDesign), and coupons for free Pie Pops.
